Police clash with crowds, opposition leaders at recall referendum protests

For the fourth time in as many weeks, police turn back thousands of protestors heading for the National Electoral Council (NEC) headquarters in Caracas. Police reportedly use tear gas as protestors chant “Traitors” and “You’re hungry too!” Opposition leader Henrique Capriles says “What we're seeing today, this deployment of troops, is an example of the government's dialogue.” At a separate protest later in the week, opposition lawmakers including Julio Borges, are attacked by pro-government groups as they try to enter the NEC headquarters. The US State Department issues a statement saying it is “deeply concerned” by the incident.
