Opposition and Regime Officials in Reported Secret Talks

Jesús Torrealba, executive secretary of the opposition alliance says that secret meetings have taken place in the Dominican Republic between government and opposition officials, under the auspices of the Union of South American Nations. Apparently, Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez and two other government officials met three opposition legislators, to discuss the current political stand-off. Torrealba makes clear that the two sides did not meet face to face, but passed messages through negotiators.

US Secretary of State John Kerry welcomes an initiative by former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero to facilitate dialogue between the government and opposition. Meanwhile, Brazil’s Foreign Minister says “We're on alert when it comes to Venezuela. Brazil and Argentina have an interest that includes mediation.” Reflecting the difficulty of dialogue, Bernardo Alvarez, Venezuela’s ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), tells a Washington think tank “We don’t believe in using the term ‘humanitarian crisis’… that is very much linked to the campaign asking for international intervention.”
