NEC finally approves signatures for recall referendum to progress
The Maduro-controlled National Electoral Council (NEC) has finally approved enough signatures to trigger the recall referendum process. Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have had their fingerprints approved in order to do so. Hundreds of Venezuelans have reported that during the validation period they were victims of harassment and ill-treatment by Chavista military units and other groups.
As Venezuelans line up to verify their signatures, small-scale food protests continue in Caracas. Human rights groups say dozens have been jailed recently for dissent. Meanwhile, Venezuelan prosecutors say that they have indicted two opposition activists on money laundering charges, a move condemned by government opponents who say the two are being targeted for seeking a recall referendum against Maduro.
