Maduro Threatens to Seize Factories and Jail Business Owners Over Economic Woes

Maduro threatens to seize idle factories and to jail business owners, ordering “all actions to recover the production apparatus, which is being paralyzed by the bourgeoisie.” He added that business people who “sabotage the country” by halting production at their plants risk being “put in handcuffs.”

Vice President for Economic Policy Miguel Perez Abad says that Venezuela will cut imports by almost half this year to preserve hard currency and keep on top of debts, despite the severe shortages of goods. Oscar Meza, Director of the Documentation Center for Social Analysis (Cendas-FVM), says that measurements of scarcity and inflation in May are going to be the worst to date. He commented, “We are officially declaring May as the month that [widespread] hunger began in Venezuela.”
