Maduro threatens opposition with crackdown worse than Turkey

With the opposition planning a large march to Caracas on 1 September in support of a recall referendum, President Maduro ominously warns at a televised event, “Did you see what happened in Turkey?... Erdoğan will seem like a nursing baby compared to what the Bolivarian revolution will do if the right wing steps over the line with a coup.”

Opposition deputy Armando Armas predicts that the 1 September demonstration “will be the largest gathering in the country’s history, and the armed forces are going to have to choose… Are they really on the side of the people and the constitution?”

Writing in Forbes, Kenneth Rapoza says “September 1. Mark it on your calendar… civil unrest and police crackdowns on protesters are expected. Venezuelans are exhausted of living in a failed state.”
