Maduro threatens National Congress, pledges increased militarization
In an implied threat to the opposition-controlled National Congress, President Maduro says in a television address, “What has congress done these past six months? Wreak destruction. Prepare to say goodbye to history, because your time is coming.” Since the National Congress took office in January, the Maduro-backed Supreme Court has issued at least 16 decisions limiting its authority.
Meanwhile, speaking at an Independence Day parade, Maduro comments “Let us continue to increase military power… An independent republic needs a military power that is ever more powerful.” He added, “I know I can count on the people and the armed forces to defeat the unconventional war, the economic war, and all the mechanisms of psychological war.”
