Maduro Threatens Congress Will “Disappear” After Rejecting State of Emergency Declaration

The opposition-controlled Congress says that Maduro’s state of emergency decree is unconstitutional, rejecting it on the basis that it would hand Maduro powers to intervene in the economy and protect national sovereignty, which Maduro claims is needed to guard against American meddling. Congress says that the decree “deepens the severe disruption of constitutional and democratic order that Venezuela is suffering through.”

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles adds “If Maduro wants to apply this decree, he needs to start preparing tanks and warplanes, because he’ll have to apply it by force.” Maduro chillingly responds, saying “I don't expect anything good from Congress. It's a matter of time before it disappears because it doesn't represent our national interest.”
