Maduro Says He Will Respect The Referendum Call If The Signatures Are Validated

With the opposition having gathered an estimated 1.85 million signatures within days, calling for a recall referendum, eclipsing the required 200,000 names, President Maduro says he would allow such a vote on removing him from power if electoral officials validate the signatures submitted. Opposition leaders say that the regime-backed National Electoral Council has already approved over 1.5 million signatures in favor of a recall referendum, but is intentionally delaying completion of the count in order to prolong and disrupt the process.

Meanwhile, Maduro’s approval rating dropped to 26.8 percent in March from 33.1 percent in February, according to a Datanalisis poll.
